Our legacy: from The Hire Service Shop to HSS DIY
We started in 1957 as The Hire Service Shop, a single shop in Kensington, London, founded on the observation that most people need a concrete mixer roughly once in their lives.
That grew into HSS, and for decades the business traded as HSS Hire. Today, that business is HSS ProService (formerly HSS Hire), and HSS DIY is its brand for DIYers, home improvers and small tradespeople, supplying the tools to hire and the materials to buy.
The names have changed, but our mission hasn’t. We hire out the tools, sell the materials and get your order to you when you need it. It’s one website and one basket, with no running around.

• HSS DIY is a brand of HSS ProService. It’s the same company, not a separate business.
• HSS ProService serves trade and credit-account customers through HSS ProService Marketplace. HSS DIY serves DIYers and small trades at hss.mom.
What do we have to offer?
We hire. Breakers, mixers, generators, floor sanders, wallpaper strippers, dumpers, the lot. Kit that is too expensive, too heavy or too rarely needed to own. You have it for as long as the job takes, then it goes back and stops being your problem.
We sell. Timber, cement, aggregates, insulation, fixings, workwear, safety gear and the hundred small things that turn up on a shopping list halfway through a Saturday.
The point of putting both on one site is simple. Most projects need a tool and a material, and nobody enjoys ordering from two places. So browse our hire range and our buy range, fill one basket, and get on with your DIY projects.

How an order works
- You have a project. It might be a patio, a bathroom refit, a fence or a small job for a client.
- You choose what you need. This can be hire items, items to buy, or both.
- We source and fulfil it. HSS ProService sources from our nationwide network of hire and supply partners, such as Speedy Hire, who help fulfil your hire and buy items.
- Your order arrives as and when you need it. Next-day delivery is available, and items in a multi-item order may arrive separately.

Do I need to be a tradesperson to hire from you?
Absolutely not! A large chunk of what goes out our doors goes to people doing up their own homes. Nobody will ask to see a qualification.
Can I hire and buy in the same order?
You sure can. Add tools and materials to one basket and then check out once. If your order has several items, however, they may arrive separately.
How do I know what size or type I need?
